Director's Message

Welcome to the Institute of Education (IoE)!

We are pleased to take you through our pages, and introduce you to what we do and stand for. We hope you will find the information on our site useful and interesting.

The Institute was established in 1965 as a School of Education to connect the university with other universities, the Ministry of Education (MoE) and all other agents of Education with the main objective of ensuring the continual improvement of teacher education and training in Ghana. In 1975, the name ‘School of Education’ was changed to ‘Institute of Education’, while maintaining its original objective. Currently, through the Institute of Education, the University of Cape Coast mentors 16 affiliated Colleges of Education (14 public; 2 private).

There are three Units under the Institute of Education that help to achieve its core mandate. These are the Outreach, Monitoring and Evaluation Unit, the Educational Research Unit and the Assessment Unit.

The Outreach Unit is responsible for mounting courses for upgrading and building the capacity of both teaching and non-teaching staff engaged in the education enterprise. It does this through the organisation of workshops, conferences, seminars and symposia, among others. It also coordinates the development and review of the pre-service teacher education curriculum being implemented in the University of Cape Coast affiliated colleges of education, and monitors its implementation. The Educational Research Unit promotes research in teacher education to inform policy and practice, publishes academic research articles in its Journal of Educational Development and Practice (JED-P), and builds the professional capacities of researchers. The Assessment Unit is in charge of examining and certifying teachers, and providing advisory services in assessment for educational practitioners. The Institute can boast of a number of pre-service and in-service teachers that have gone through its programmes and activities. It also has many research outputs from international and local projects in which our senior members have participated. Some of the outputs can be found on our site.

The Institute operates a Chalet and Restaurant facility with the primary aim of providing accommodation to the University’s guests and the general public.

The Institute is headed by a Director, with a team of Lecturers, Research Fellows and Administrators who are conscious of time-bound deliverables, and are committed to our core values of integrity, professionalism, teamwork, excellence and diversity.

You are welcome to browse our site to find more information on our activities and research outputs. You may contact us on telephone 0332136925/0332133793 or email at ioe@ucc.edu.gh with any questions or collaborations.
